Whether you are a hockey player, figure skater or just enjoy skating around recreationally, skate sharpening should always be a vital part of any ice skater's routine. We recommend that you have your blades sharpened aproximately every 10-20 hours on the ice, however this is can vary from person to person depending on your skate style.
We offer an in store whilst you wait service, and our friendly team of Blademaster trained specialists are on hand to assist with suggesting if a change in hollow or a blade profile may improve your performance. Ice skate sharpening of Skates bought in store is free of charge.
Here at Willies, our standard and most popular sharpen is 1/2" radius of hollow. However our Blademaster trained staff are equipped to sharpen blades from 3/8" to 1" in depth.
● Looking for more bite on the ice? Consider 3/8" or 7/16"+-
● Looking for more glide? 9/16" through to 1" might be for you.
There are a number of factors to determine which radius of hollow (ROH) is best for you. These include ice conditions, weight of skater and just overall preference.
Improved Control and Stability on the Ice
Sharp blades help you maintain balance, turn more smoothly and react quicker during games or practice. Whether you're into hockey or figure skating, keeping your edges in top condition ensures better control on every stride.
Better Speed and Energy Efficiency
When your skates are properly sharpened, you glide faster and more effortlessly across the ice. A quality ice skate sharpening reduces friction, meaning less effort and more speed - essential for competitive skaters and recreational users alike.
Enhanced Safety and Reduced Risk of Injury
Blunt or uneven blades can cause slips, falls, and unnecessary strain. Regular professional skate sharpening makes sure your blades grip the ice correctly, helping to avoid accidents and keeping you skating safely, whether in games or casual sessions.
On average most skaters can get around 10-20 hours worth of skating between grinds. This, however, is determined by factors of the individual. Body weight, aggression, style, and time spent on the ice can all have a different effect on how quickly their skates will lose their edge. Ice quality and how soft or hard the ice is will have another big effect on blade wear. We advise hockey players to get their edges done more frequently than this to ensure peak performance.
This helps maintain edge quality and prolongs blade life.
No booking required.
Just bring your skates into our stores and the team will sharpen them while you wait or during the same visit.
The hollow is the radius cut into the blade, affecting grip and glide.
Deeper hollows give more bite, while shallower hollows offer more speed. Staff can recommend the best option based on your level and playing style.
