Toe ties connect the tip of your leg pad to the toe of your skate, controlling the rotation of your pad around your shin. There are a few toe tie systems that you can use, and different goalies will prefer different methods depending on the degree of pad rotation that they’re comfortable with.
Some goalies may prefer no toe ties at all, but this can make the pad spin on landing. If you do go for toe ties, make sure they’re not secured too tightly as this can lead to extra strain on your knees.
Each toe tie system connects to your leg pad via a toe bridge; this is an attachment that connects to your pad via two metal screws or laces and allows you to attach your preferred toe tie system to your skate.
You can use an ice skate lace to loop through the toe bridge and then through the cowling or holder of your skate. This method creates a secure attachment for an improved feel, although you can slacken this toe tie by tying knots behind the toe bridge.
Delivering more flexibility than a traditional lace toe tie, using elastic allows more rotation of your leg pad while actively pulling your leg pad back into position once you stand up. These can either be knotted to your toe bridge or attached via a ‘sewn-in’ velcro fastener that bolts to your toe bridge.
If you need to clean up a second-hand pair of leg pads to start collecting your own puck marks, grab the Nash Puck Out solution and apply it to your leg pads, then use the supplied eraser to clean your pads with minimal scrubbing.
