HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT ROLLER HOCKEY WHEELS?
The most important things to consider when choosing the right inline hockey wheels for your skates are the size of the wheel and the surface you’re playing on.
You can easily find the right wheel size by looking at your current chassis; there should be a ‘recommended wheel size’ printed on it. Most inline hockey skates have a standard four-wheel setup, where all the wheels on a frame are the same size (usually either 76mm or 80mm).
The Hi-Lo setup is also emerging in popularity amongst inline hockey players, which features two larger back wheels and two smaller front wheels (meaning your two rear wheels are 80mm, and the two front wheels are 76mm). If this is how your frame is set up, the ‘recommended wheel size’ will read ‘80-80-76-76’.
Once you’ve got the right wheel size, you must ensure your wheels are right for your surface! Wheels are categorised as suitable for either indoor or outdoor hockey, with different characteristics to keep you on top of your game no matter what you’re playing on.
Indoor hockey wheels tend to be softer, which delivers much more grip and control on smoother indoor surfaces like sports halls. This softness does mean that your indoor wheels will get shredded up on rougher surfaces, which is where outdoor street hockey wheels come in.
Made of a much more durable material, outdoor hockey wheels are designed to use the extra friction from an outdoor surface for maximum energy transfer while staying resistant to damage and wear from these rougher surfaces.
If you play on indoor and outdoor surfaces, we highly recommend picking up a set of both indoor and outdoor wheels! Playing outdoors on indoor wheels will wreck your wheels, and playing indoors on outdoor wheels will mean you’re sliding out all over the court.
