There’s a massive range of wheels out there for your quad roller skates, but a lot of it comes down to your personal preference, ability, and the surface you’re skating on. 

The first thing to consider is wheel diameter/height. Larger wheels (65-70mm diameter) are usually faster, particularly suiting skaters that love speed or skate on outdoor surfaces. Smaller wheels (45mm diameter) are great for stability and technical movements, so artistic or freestyle skaters should opt for smaller wheels.

Width is also important when it comes to choosing the right size wheels for your quad skates! As a general rule, wider wheels (44mm width) are perfect for beginners, offering great stability by sacrificing some agility. Narrower wheels (31mm) suit more advanced, artistic skaters as narrower wheels lower your centre of gravity for better agility.

Once you’ve found the right wheel size, you must find the right wheels for your surface! Quad skate wheels are categorised due to their ‘hardness’ (also known as durometer rating), ranging from the super-soft 74A all the way up to 105A. The harder your wheel (and the higher the rating), the harder and faster a wheel will move, with less grip.

Indoor wheels tend to be softer for better grip and control on smoother indoor surfaces like sports halls. This softness does mean that your indoor wheels will get shredded up on rougher surfaces, which is where outdoor wheels come in.

Made to be much more durable, outdoor wheels with a high durometer rating are designed to use the extra friction from an outdoor surface for maximum energy transfer while staying resistant to damage and wear from these rougher surfaces. 

If you skate on both indoor and outdoor surfaces, we highly recommend picking up a set of both indoor and outdoor wheels! Skating outdoors on indoor wheels will wreck your wheels, and skating indoors on outdoor wheels will mean you’re sliding out all over the surface.

Once you start to notice that your quad roller skate wheels look or feel uneven, it’s time to take a look at your wheels. Before replacing, you can rotate your wheels to prolong their life as skate wheels often wear down on one side first.

If your wheels have severely worn down and the core is showing, then replacing your wheels is the best option.

When the wheels on your quad skates need replacing, all you’ll need to change them is a skate tool, Allen key or socket wrench.

Start by unscrewing each wheel's axles and putting them to the side. At this point, you can check for wear and tear on your axles in case they need replacing too. 

Then, remove the spacers and bearings from your old wheels, and place them on your new wheels. Put the new wheels back into your frames and use the skate tool or Allen key to tighten them back up. 

Check that your wheels can spin freely — if they’re not spinning, you may need to loosen the axle, or if they’re wobbling, the axle needs tightening a bit more.
