Following the success of the Nottingham programme, the Girls’ Learn to Play Ice Hockey scheme arrived in Coventry in July 2025 — bringing a fresh wave of new players onto the ice. Delivered in partnership with Bauer Hockey, Planet Ice Skydome Arena, and the Coventry Phoenix Women’s Ice Hockey Club, the programme welcomed girls and women aged 11+ who were ready to try something active, empowering, and seriously fun.
Running every Sunday from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Skydome Arena, the sessions offered a supportive, beginner‑friendly introduction to the sport. Participants learned the fundamentals of skating, stickhandling, and basic gameplay under the guidance of experienced coaches who created a relaxed, confidence‑building environment for newcomers.
The programme remained accessible thanks to simple pay‑as‑you‑go pricing, with discounted rates available for Ice Card holders. Willies provided a full range of loan equipment to help players get started, ensuring that lack of kit wasn’t a barrier to joining in. (Skates were required separately or available to hire from Planet Ice.)
Throughout the programme, the atmosphere was welcoming, inclusive, and full of energy. Many participants were stepping onto the ice for the very first time, discovering the excitement of hockey while making new friends and building their skills week by week.
Registration for the Coventry programme quickly filled, reflecting the growing interest in women’s and girls’ hockey across the region. For those who took part, it offered a memorable and inspiring introduction to the sport — and, for many, the beginning of their hockey journey.
