Underneath all their protective gear, ice hockey and some inline hockey players choose to wear a base layer or sweats. These can be standard base layers (loose-fitting athletic shirts and bottoms) or compression base layers.
Base layers provide a barrier between your skin and your gear, protecting against chafing and pinching, as well as helping to keep you warm, dry and protected while you play. Some players like short-sleeved shirts to stop their elbow pads from sliding, but choosing long-sleeved shirts and pants can also help to prolong the life of your hockey gear, as they provide a barrier between your equipment and your sweat!
Compression base layers are an excellent option for hockey players, as the base layer ‘compresses’ the muscles while you play, helping to keep you warm, wick away sweat, and even reduce the likelihood of injuries and soreness.
Both standard and compression base layers are designed to fit pretty snugly to your body, but they shouldn’t feel uncomfortably tight or restrict your movement.
Most senior hockey base layers will come in sizes S – XXL and are true to your regular clothing sizes. Check out our size guides on each of our base layers to find your perfect fit!
